    80th Anniversary of D-Day

June 6th, 2024 marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day. On that day in 1944, Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy (France) to open the way to Germany from the West. Victory in the Normandy campaign would come at a terrible cost. The Canadians suffered the most casualties of any division in the British Army Group.

The HMCS Alberni Museum & Memorial, located at 625 Cliffe Avenue, will have 80th Anniversary panels on display from now until the end of the summer. Click here to learn more about the history of D-Day and the stories of those who served.

    Canada Day! We are open!

The Courtenay and District Museum will celebrate Canada Day with an open house from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on Monday, July 1st. Guests are welcome to enjoy live music by Alan Jossul, enter to win a door prize, and try their hand at kids’ crafts. There will also be a special one-day-only 50% off sale for the book Step Into Wilderness: A Pictorial History of Outdoor Exploration in and around the Comox Valley (limit of 3 per person).

While you’re at the museum loving the air-conditioned comfort, take a few moments to check out the new second floor exhibit “Models & Miniatures”.

    Standing the Test of Time

This month marks anniversary milestones for several Comox Valley longstanding clubs, businesses, and organizations.

The Comox Valley Writers Society hosted their 60th anniversary celebrations at Anderton Gardens on June 8th, complete with music, readings of poetry, children’s stories, fiction, and memoir in areas of the gardens.

The non-profit Soroptimist Courtenay organization is celebrating 80 years of providing women and girls access to the education and training needed to achieve economic empowerment.

This year's Denman Island Readers and Writers Festival, from July 19th - 21st, will mark its 20th anniversary supporting authors and book lovers far and wide. Show up to support these local groups that have enriched our Valley’s spirit, and make yourself a part of our history.

39th Anniversary of Miners Memorial in Cumberland

June 14th - 16th marks the 39th anniversary of Miners Memorial in Cumberland. Every year since 1986 community members, organizers, activists, historians, musicians, families and the labour community have come together to commemorate the sacrifices of workers around the world and right here in Cumberland.

Although decades have passed since the last mines closed in Cumberland, the memories of mining and the deep sense of grief over the loss of life underground remains. Click here for more details.

    Spotlight on Courtenay Streets

Grieve Avenue and some of the family history behind its namesake are the feature for this month.

George Grieve’s mysterious disappearance, overseeing the building of the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, and the arrival of brother Henry Grieve are all covered in this article from the March 25th, 1970 edition of the Comox District Free Press.
